Fed Rate Hike Today: What the September 2026 Increase Means for You

On September 16, 2026, the Federal Open Market Committee raised the federal funds target range by 0.25 percentage point, to 3.75%–4%. The vote was 12–0. The statement said inflation remains elevated and that the move is meant to support a faster return to the Fed’s 2% inflation goal. Source: Federal Reserve, FOMC statement, September 16, 2026.

Implementation starts September 17: interest on reserve balances goes to 3.90%, and the primary credit rate goes to 4.00%. Source: Federal Reserve implementation note.

That is a small step in the overnight bank rate. It is not a new tax on your paycheck. It still shows up in the household through variable debt and through what cash can earn.

What the Fed actually changed

The federal funds rate is what banks charge each other for overnight reserves. Your card, car loan, and mortgage are priced off other benchmarks that tend to move when this rate moves — not always the same day, and not always by a full quarter point.

The Committee also said the economy is expanding at a solid pace, job gains have kept up with the workforce, and unemployment has changed little. Inflation is the problem they named. Full text: federalreserve.gov statement.

This is the first hike since 2023 after a long pause. Treat that as context, not as a forecast that more hikes are guaranteed. The next scheduled meetings are still on the Fed calendar. Nothing in the statement locks those in.

What it means if you carry a balance

Credit cards. Most cards use a variable APR tied to the prime rate. Prime usually moves with the Fed. A quarter-point hike on a $5,000 revolving balance is a few dollars a month, not a new car payment — unless you already pay only the minimum. Then the extra interest stacks. Pay the card down first: how to pay off credit card debt faster.

A true 0% purchase promo does not reprice during the window if you follow the terms. Deferred-interest medical cards are a different product. Read that split here: 0% APR vs paying cash.

HELOCs and adjustable-rate mortgages. These often reset off prime or another index. The payment change is delayed until the next adjustment date in your contract. Pull the note. Do not guess from a headline.

Auto loans and fixed mortgages already closed. The rate you signed is the rate you have. Today’s hike does not rewrite that contract. It can raise the quote on a new loan or refinance. If you were shopping a refinance, re-run the break-even. Start with rate-and-term refinance explained if that is the product you were considering.

What it means if you have cash

Higher policy rates are why HYSA and money-market yields have been worth using instead of a 0.01% brick-and-mortar savings account. Banks do not have to pass the hike through on day one. Park leftover cash on payday, not after the leftover disappears: paycheck to checking vs HYSA.

What it does not mean

  • It does not automatically raise rent next Friday.
  • It does not wipe a fixed 30-year mortgage.
  • It does not replace the leftover-dollar problem. Prices can stay high even while the Fed hikes. That is the “inflation eats time” problem: how inflation eats your free time.
  • It is not a reason to day-trade the announcement.

August CPI was still running 3.4% over the year, with a 0.4% monthly rise, which is the backdrop the Committee is reacting to. Source: BLS CPI.

What to do this week

  1. List variable-rate balances (cards, HELOC, personal line). Write the current APR from the statement, not from memory.
  2. If the leftover is negative, cut the leak before you refinance anything. Cash flow math.
  3. If you have a starter emergency fund, leave it in the HYSA. Do not “invest the hike.”
  4. Ignore forecasts of the October meeting until there is another statement.

The Fed’s job today was the overnight rate. Your job is still the leftover number.
